Indonesia Peace Road 2015

Jakarta, August 9, 2015

In the early morning of Sunday, 9 August 2015, participants of the Indonesian Peace Road 2015 started to gather in front of the Governor’s Office even before daybreak.  Our registration table and banners attracted also other cyclists who had come to enjoy a peaceful ride along Jalan M.H. Thamrin on this car-free day and asked for permission to join us in our march from the Governor’s Office to Bundaran HI and back.

Jakarta was decorated in red and white in preparation for the 70th Anniversary of Indonesia’s Declaration of Independence. Many of our participants were also dressed in red and white underlining the theme of our march: 70 years of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia: Towards Unity and Peace in Indonesia.

After singing the National Anthem, signing the Peace Road banner and a brief explanation of the significance of this program, Mrs. Herawaty Rinto Paeran, Indonesian Peace President, flagged off the march. Thousands of members of Pencak Silat had gathered from all over Java to walk the same route at the same time as we started our march. When we started to sing patriotic songs, they joined in joyfully walking side by side.

The highlight was at Jakarta’s historical landmark – Bundaran HI – with its prestigious buildings and monument. When it was time to turn back, we walked leisurely sharing our thoughts and hearts with each other. For some of us, it was the first time to walk this route on a car-free day and we were amazed at the throngs of people walking and cycling along this road.  Bystanders took note not only of our bright banners and colors but also of the bright spirit of our participants. It was time to celebrate the joy of bringing peace and unity to our country and people at a time of global conflict.

The Indonesia Peace Road 2015 was broadcast on TVRI with interviews by the chair and vice-chair of the organizing committee, Mrs. Herawaty Rinto Paeran and Mrs. Meyke Rangkang
